After School Sewing Club

Welcome to our brand new after school sewing club in E17. A place where you will be free to explore your creativity and ideas in a welcoming, supportive environment and make new friends. We'll learn a wide range of skills that can be used in lots of fun projects using fabric - from little bags and accessories, to soft toys and cushions. Each week we'll learn some key skills that will help you to bring your creative ideas to life.

We'll focus on building confidence to use our skills imaginatively to make things that we love rather than creating 'perfect' pieces.

Themes of sustainability will run through this club, and we will use reclaimed or donated materials for our making where possible. We will talk about textiles waste and have a go at exciting upcycling projects; changing things we already own and applying all of the skills we've learnt to make something unique.

What will we learn?

  • Threading a needle and tying a knot
  • Simple embroidery stitches (eg. running stitch, backstitch, blanket stitch, chain stitch, satin stitch and more)
  • Techniques of appliqué, patchwork and decorative stitching
  • Learn the basics of using a sewing machine to sew straight lines
  • The joy of using what we already have to make something we love - using upcycling techniques to change clothing and accessories
  • Natural dyeing of fabric

Who runs the club?

I'm Carly, a qualified Primary teacher and SENDCo with over 20 years of experience working with children across London. I have two of my own children (age 9 and 6) so know how busy school life is and the academic demands that are placed on our young people. Having space to be free and express our creativity is so important. I taught myself to sew over 5 years ago - it became more than a hobby and grew into a business where I make clothing and accessories from vintage and reclaimed fabrics. I'm so excited to get back to teaching something I love and try to inspire children to take up a craft.
