Join me for a one-off beginner's sewing lesson in a calm and welcoming space. We'll work together to create a pair of baby trousers made from vintage and reclaimed fabrics available at the studio. Pre-crawling babies are welcome to join - there's a dedicated space for them to kick around and relax, and we will stop and start according to the needs of everyone in the group.
What will I learn?
You'll learn the basic skills needed to get you started on a sewing machine, even if you've never used one before. After the session, you'll be sent a link to a PDF sewing pattern and instructions so that you can have another go at home if you have a machine.
Using a sewing pattern, you will cut out fabric to make your own pair of elasticated baby trousers, in a size of your choice. There will be two designs to choose from - trousers or long shorts. Sizes available: 0-3 months up to age 2-3.
Both are made using the same method - we will learn how to:
- position a sewing pattern on fabric and follow markings to cut out
- sew and finish seams
- create a waist channel and insert elastic
- sew a hem
Where will the sessions take place?
A the One of Six cabin in Walthamstow Central. This is a studio space equipped with sewing machines, fabric and haberdashery. There is a toilet, sink and tea and coffee making facilities. The cabin does not have step-free access so if you'd like to bring a buggy it would need to be carried up a flight of stairs and some small steps leading to the cabin. Slings would be preferred but there is room for buggies if needed.
Do I need any prior experience?
No! We'll go through all the basics and get you sewing on a machine.
Who will teach the sessions?
The sessions will be taught by Carly, a qualified teacher and SENDCo and self-taught sewist. Carly is also a local mum and has two of her own children, aged 9 and 7.
